The firing civil servants on the cheap bill

On tuesday, the coalition government passed a bill, the name of which i can't remember, which allows for the cheap removal of public sector workers.
and not one single mention anywhere.
i would have thought it might have been an important issue, but not many others seem to agree

Shortages in social services

There's a story about Birmingham social services being short of cash, lacking staff etc.
The things are
1) cuts will be terrible and make things worse than they are
2) where will the money come from?

in defence of the public sector

A nice bit in the letters at the Guardian defending the public sector, which doesn't happen enough:
"Just how productive would that sector be without public sector education and training to supply its workers; public sector healthcare to keep them fit for duty; state benefits to subsidise poverty wages; publicly funded transport infrastructure to deliver their goods?"
